Saint Luis Rey Churchill
Monday June 23rd, 2003
Having spent the latter portion of the morning busily re-washering all the dripping faucets in the household, I venture out onto the porch at noon-hour with a half'n'half mug of Guatemalan-Costa Rican and my SLR Churchill. Today is one of those sultry, city summer days. Mount Royal and the downtown core are blanketed in diffuse haze, a soft southwesterly breeze bringing with it the promise of a late afternoon thunderstorm. The leaves on the trees, yet to forsake their brilliant spring green foliage, wave to and fro while birds chirpily converse and people slowly pace the sun-baked sidewalks. This Colorado Claro clad Julieta 2 bears little resemblance to reddish, sienna hued recent issues. Its light brown sheen complements the Florentine gold of the Saint Luis Rey band to perfection. The cigar feels the flame and commences to caress my palate with almond croissant butteriness as well as coffee and cream. I immediately sense that I'm in for a special treat when notions of nutmeg and cinnamon appear, only to be followed by a supple lick of leather. As I gently tap each inch and a half of pale grey ash from the tip, its medium-bodied flavour progresses toward allspice. The grand finale caps proceedings by adding piquant cedar and pepper tones. This breathtakingly beautiful and roundly satisfying smoke simply oozes class. In my books, when it comes to matters of pure style and integration of taste, Saint Luis Rey reigns supreme.
