How reliable is the "salt test"?

I just bought a hygrometer from Heartfelt and decided to salt test it. I put it along with my years-trusted hygro into a 2 qt mason jar with 1 Tbsp of salt-slurry in a very small cup. The salt test is supposed to produce 75% RH, right? Well, after approximately 12 hours the new hygro reads 2% under and my trusty-old hygro reads 6% over. I'm puzzled because I was convinced the old one was accurate, all the evidence suggests so. Thoughts?
