Cohiba Coronas Especiale
"Civilized"
Cohiba Coronas Especiale Country of fabrication: Cuba Dimensions: 6 inches by 38-ring gauge Type of cigar: Laguito No.2 Issue date: Unknown. Pre-2003, I suspect. Date smoked: Friday May 12th, 2006 Accompanying drinks: El Dorado Special Reserve 15 Year Old Finest Demerara Rum from Guyana – 40% alcohol by volume. A tall glass of still water at the side. A great pairing all told, the inherent sweetness and cask influence of the Rum complementing the Cohiba moment to moment. Colour of wrapper: Colorado Claro to Colorado. Ochre-olive tinged plantation teak with a pale cocoa brown cast. Scattered walnut toned oil streaks. Colour of binder: Cocoa brown. Colour of filler: Straw through reddish burnt sienna to dark chocolate. Surface: Buttery smooth sheen offset by a few bumpy areas and stretch marks. Veins: Generally finely delineated. Tooth: Sparse and subdued. Cap: Well applied with the classic pigtail appendage. Box press: None. Roll pattern: Predominantly circumferential and nicely bunched. Finger feel: Medium-firm to firm. Combustion: Exemplary. No corrections or relights required. Ash: Medium grey to charcoal. Held past 1 inch and left an almost straight ember once disengaged. Total smoking time: A little more than 1 hour. Pre-light aroma: Leather saddles. Rich terracotta earth. Hay. Cocoa powder, roasted nuts coated with butter and sweet spices in cream. Pre-light draw: Tobacco infused with exotic spices. Cedar. Yogurt. Post-light aroma: Toasted honey-nut cereal and tobacco with a hint of milk chocolate. Opening on palate: Very smooth, well rounded, medium bodied tobacco. Soy milk. Honey dripped sparingly onto sourdough toast. Cedar. Light dustings of nutmeg and cayenne. Tight integration of the flavour elements. Early stages: Blades of grass bundled in a cigar box. Subtle bittersweet medley of vanilla, pepper and anise overlying the core tobacco taste. A hint of Rice Crispies squares. Mid portion: A sensation of escalating strength bound within the velvety texture. Focused. Discreet doses of uplifted lemon pepper deftly counterpointing the increasingly amalgamated flavours. An assured sense of proportion. Latter stages: The bean aspect acquiring an Arabica coffee-like demeanour, with whispers of bitter chocolate and wood shavings in cream. Summary: Delectable and perfectly balanced.
