Swedish Malt Whisky!

Had my first go at a recently purchased bottle of Mackmyra First Edition from Sweden. The distillery is already garnering praise for the quality of its products, (just ask Jim Murray or Ralfy), and this particular release very much fits into that level of expectations fulfilled.

My initial impression is of a cleanly distilled, carefully matured whisky that exhibits many of the traits of a solid Highland Scotch malt (i.e. a fresh grassiness allied with pear fruit and sweeter touches of sugared citrus and honey), but with a few unique twists of its own (the flavour quality of the oak, for one) tossed into the mix for good measure.

Though I can see this one making for an ideal apéritif, I have to admit it paired pretty well with chocolate cake last night.

Well worth investigating for those of you who are more adventurous in your whisky tastes.
