I've played in original and covers bands. If your originals are good, people will like them. If your covers are obscure, people willthink they are originals.

A lot of music I like tends to grow on me the more times I hear it. The really good stuff makes me stop and listen, immediately try to find out what it is, and immediately want to hear it again.

Which is why I agree with the above to hook them with good covers interspersed with originals and to continue bringing them back the next time.
