Reviews - Centennario Classic D, Juan Lopez titania, Puros I

I decided to sit back with a cigar tonight so I picked out a Centennario Classic D I got in a sampler somewhere. The appearance was so-so, with a band that looks a lot better off of the cigar for some reason. This is a 6x44 grand corona from Nicaragua made by Felipe Gregorio. The flavor was pretty decent for the first few puffs. But that was about all I got from it...this thing was just way too tight to smoke. I tried a few loosening tactics but they didn't help either. I tossed it after an inch. I would try one of these again though.

After that I decided to try a Juan Lopez titania, a massive 7 1/4x54 nicaraguan cigar. Apperance-wise this thing scores an easy 10/10. The band is beautiful and the wrapper is very smooth, oily, and no trace of veins and such. The box-press is really well done. It lit up fine and had a good draw, but started to tunnel about halfway through. Overall, the flavor on this was really lacking. It wasn't really bland, but there was nothing that really stood out whatsoever. The burn issues got much worse after the halfway point so I had to toss it. I have several more of these that I will try and age...maybe for a very long time. This one gets a D+ in my book and was a real letdown.

Finally, I went for a Puros Indios palma real. I don't know why I picked this. I bought a fiver for $3 off cbid, and someone has to smoke them. Besides, I figured it couldn't get much worse than the others. The palma real is a cheap, ugly looking panatella with a band that looks like it was made by a blind counterfeiter. They are the kind of cigar you want to stick up your nose at a party or something for entertainment. The first thing I noticed from the initial light was the flavors of cardboard, rotten cabbage, and some pepper. The rotten cabbage flavor was gone after about 1/2 inch though, and the pepperyness increased throughout the cigar with the cardboard taste fading into a more rich tobacco taste. No burn or draw problems on this one. This was probably the best cigar I had all day, with a grade of C+. That cabbage flavor at the beginning keeps it from a B-. Not a bad yard gar', except for the fact that it tastes like yard at first. I had a CAO CX2 belicoso a few days ago and this was actually much better at a fraction of the price.

So, all in all I smoked some pretty crappy cigars, but the Puros Indios Palma Real was better than I expected.
