Cigar Tax Discussions
I just did a search, and found quite a few threads on SCHIP, the New York and Florida tax increases, which is fine. California, though is now trying to impose even more onerous taxation as the state government is broke, and will cease paying many types of benefits to close a $24,000,000,000 shortfall.
Of COURSE taxing tobacco products is one of the very FIRST things mentioned, and at the rates being proposed would raise $2,000,000,000 of the $24,000,000,000. Chris McCalla of the IPCPR has already fired a salvo against such taxes. Quote:

Florida's $1 "user fee" goes into effect on July 1st.
CW News Entry It's got all the usual rot about Medicaid, children and all that rot.

I lived in CA in the early 1990's and the state was broke back then. The state ran out of money during budget wrangling and checks to state workers were essentially IOU's that the banks were accepting. This started dragging on and the banks said they were going to stop accepting the checks which forced CA to get it together quick.
California government runs in a perpetual state of broken-ness me thinks. |

Here's a really good, not too difficult to read, report from the National Center for Policy Analysis.
