Altos Tequila
Got it because it had a pretty bottle and didn't cost too much. Thought it couldn't be too bad.
80 proof, nice and smooth, slight sweetness, but WTF??? It has a hint of menthol, or aftershave, or something like that. I feel like I'm drinking mouthwash. Anyone ever expereinced this in a tequila before? |

never heard of it. I suppose you checked to make sure it was aqua velva.
I've been sipping mezcal, which I find way better than tequila... look for the organic stuff "del maguey" it is tasty

Seriously, I'm at a loss. It may as well be aqua velva. I can't really recognize the smell. eucalyptus? Mint? aftershave? something herbal and minty, and not even remotely related to what tequila should taste like.
Seriously. Tequila is fermented from juice from a fruit, and there is no way a scent like that should be found in a 100% agave bottle, it has to be added or contaminated. You can't get that sort of flavor by fermentation or distillation; it's not a side product of those processes. I'm sitting here taking a sniff of it as I write, and I still can't identify what that smell is. |

That sounds like I really poor tequila that the maker is trying to mask by adding flavors, kind of like cheaper wines will try to over oak to hide how thin the wine is.
Really good tequila tastes like cognac and is smooth as silk.

Plata or Reposado?
I'm thinking the former as I've read reviews on this one that describe aromas of "herbaceous spice and green pepper" and flavors of "candied ginger, pepper and mint". Sounds close to the menthol you are experiencing. Maybe keep this one for mixing and get a good Anejo for sipping. Here's the root of the problem: Last edited by Ted; 07-27-2014 at 07:34 AM. |

it's a reposado. I think I figured part of it out, is smells like rubbing alcohol.
Don't judge me too harshly about a cheap pretty bottle. Look at buffalo trace. You sometimes find good stuff in a decorative bottle with decent quality. I wasn't expecting perfection, mostly hoping that I'd get lucky. I should have bought some jameson's instead. |

I finally figured it out. It tastes exactly like a mild gin. So it is going to be used in martinis.
Seriously. Gin. I actually got out a bottle of tanqeray and compared them, and my god, the similarity was absolutely astounding. It's a good time for martinis anyway. |

If it tasted like tequila, it would be different. I'd feed it to the wife with orange juice. But this stuff mixed with OJ would taste like Gin and Juice, or whatever.
