I would love to get a Travel Humidor. However, I am a cheap bastard when it comes to accessories, so you see where the problem is.
I could probably get a Pelican case cheap, but it would then need inserts. Any idea where I could get cigar-tray inserts for a empty or self made case? BILL "Lars: The Joe Camel of cigars" Edited by - unklebill on 03/28/2002 10:49:46 AM

Bill - I looked at this option and ended buying a Sherman. The price difference was only a few bucks by the time you were done.

Sherman sells the inserts. Or, Otterbox does. Check out their sites.
How big of a travel humi are you looking for. When I only want to carry five or six sticks, I use an old videotape case - not the cheap ones from Blockbuster, but the professional ones that are made for shipping. I lined one with some cedar, and put a humi pak in it, and a small piece of bubblewrap. Send me your snailer, and I'll send you one. George

See the link that I posted in your first thread. I have two - a "real" Sherman 18, and a homemade Sherman-type 30 using a Pelican case, Sherman trays, Mr. Moisture humidifier and an analog hygrometer. it looks, acts and feels exactly like the Sherman 30.
the Pelican cases can be found at a reasonable cost, but by the time you get the trays, a humidifier, and a hygrometer - the price difference is not very much from the real Sherman.

My choices?
1. Fuente Humidor bag 2. Tupperware 3. Cigar Classics Aluminum tube for nearly indestructible transport of 2 cigars 4. Cigar Caddy (5400 or 5540 if you are on planes) 5. Csonka 6. Well, we've already moved out of the cheap bastard range on the Csonkas so I won't even go any further. I know everyone has done the thing about full foam sleeve cradle for your cigars vs. the foam inserts found in stuff like the Cigar Caddy. I don't see it. My Cigar Caddy gets packed in my checked luggage and has been through 12 trips already. Zero problems, no torn wrappers, etc. I don't use their humidifier though. I just throw a Humidi-pak in top of each tray. I now have a 5540. If I pack it light, I throw my lighters and cutters into the bottom and then stack the inserts on top of them. Not a problem yet. I know of several people who have had the Shermans and finally got rid of them, because they kept getting dented when traveling. Of course, all of them moved up to a ZERO Halliburton, but that doesn't fall into the cheap bastard category. |
