I'm not sure, Doug. The bartender didn't say what the second barrel was, and the literature I found online only mentions "toasted oak." I definitely got the vanilla/cinnamon impressions from the oak.

That's it, Jeff. This barrel was sold to Richard Sandoval, the owner of Tamayo Restaurant in Denver, which is where I tried it.

I get the impression from the few reviews I've read that this one lies, flavour-wise, somewhere between a Reposado and an Añejo... that is, a little more influence from the oak but not enough to obscure the purity of taste from the agave. As far as I'm aware, some of the finishing casks used so far have been ex-Bourbon, ex-Port and ex-Cognac ones.

Either which way, it does sound delicious.

If I had to guess, I'd say this one was ex-Cognac. I did not get the kind of impressions I've gotten from Scotch finished in Port barrels, nor did I get bourbon-like impressions.

I actually prefer Reposados to Añejos because the agave origin of the tequila still shines through. The reviews you cite were spot-damn-on. The oak/barrel tones definitely did not overwhelm the agave, which had the sweet finish of higher-altitude cultivation. That contrasted rather strongly with a low-altitude agave Añejo that they were pouring at the tasting, which had a distinctly earthy note.

Herradura makes some good shit.

20 years ago I bought some "el jimador" in mexico. That shit is awesome, and then it was 10$ for the 750ml bottle. It's still pretty cheap in Mexico, but up here its 35$ or so for the same size.

If I remember correctly, El Jimador is Herradura's 'second label', as well as being the best selling tequila in its homeland. I think I still have the remnants of a bottle of the Reposado kicking around somewhere in one of my liquor cabinets.

El Jimador Reposado is definitely a good pour for the price, but it can't hold a candle to the Herradura.

The Herradura Reposado costs CDN$75.25 in my neck of the woods - more than double the price of the El Jimador.

(Of course, the Seleccion Suprema went for a hefty $CDN295 15 odd years ago.)
