I got to sample Basil Haydens, Old Kirk and a 4 Roses I'd never had before. Maybe a whole shot total between the 3. Been so long with any, I had almost forgotten how good some bourbons taste.

A new one for me Friday night... Legent Kentucky Straight Bourbon (47%ABV, a Beam product), finished in wine and Sherry casks. Very fruit-laden nose, and well balanced on the palate. I sense this whiskey needs time in the glass to fully open up. Looking forward to further tastings!

Agreed. And a lot are so smooth, very little bite going down that it's too easy to overindulge. lol I did that with some kind of fine rum years ago at my birthday party. I was messed up. I think it was my 40th?

Another pour of Beam's Legent Bourbon last night. I'm usually a little wary of wine cask finished whiskies (some are really good and some not so, think Angel's Envy), but this one strikes a nice balance between the grain components and finishing process.

Introduced J to Blanton last night. Now that he's not on the bottom of the totem pole, he needs to learn golf, whiskey and cigars. I can help him with the latter two but he's on his own with golf.

A healthy dram of Aberlour 12 Year Old (single malt Scotch) tonight... This is a decent, fairly easy-drinking Speyside whisky that works. That said, the older versions and the cask strength a'bunadh represent a significant upgrade palate-wise.

Kilchoman Machir Bay (single Islay malt whisky - 46%ABV) off the top of a freshly opened bottle. Not exactly cheap for a no-age-statement spirit, but still well worth the asking price. Peat? Certainly, though surprisingly complex, given its melding of earthy and minerally overtones. And the malt aspect is so, so sweet, perfectly balancing out the peat on the finish. Clean as a whistle high quality Scotch.
