Hey everybody, I have been smoking cigars randomly off and on for the past five years, I have now decided to just get serious about it. I got a little humidor for Christmas and a nice little sampler; however I am a noob but I am also a sponge looking to soak up valuable info and advice from day one basics to highbrow knowledge. So if anyone wants to unload their sage wisdom please do so, I want to learn it all.

Again, let me cheerfully welcome you to the community. You can learn a lot here, there are people here who have decades in the business, and most of the members here have been passionately smoking cigars for decades. As far as wisdom, you can guess that the people here have made all of the mistakes, and learned from them.

Look through the threads, and by all means, do not hesitate to ask questions. Put in a question, and you will get an answer, and a good one.

But, right up front, let me suggest that you don't ask whether the cellophane wrapper should be taken off.

EVERYBODY knows that you have to leave it on...

I've found the best way of learning is by doing. Plus you are the only person who really knows what agrees with your palate, so my advice is ...

1. Buy a wide variety of cigars.
2. Get a note book and start a cigar journal. Write down what you smoked, where and the positive and negative aspects. Pretty soon you will have a good list of favorites.
3. Don't go hog wild and buy huge quantities. You may discover your tastes changing and evolving over time. So something you really enjoy today may seem bland or even rank when you ring in 2015.
4. Share your experiences with the community.

I have to agree with ted. There can't be a bigger mistake for the person who is just embarking on this than buying in boxes, or buying on price or recommendation alone. You inevitably wind up with a ton of smokes that you don't want, and you are still buying more.

The very best possible idea for a person starting "hobby" smoking and collecting is buying in five packs. You save a lot compared to singles, and a single is no way to judge a cigar. A five pack over a month or so will give you a solid understanding of what that cigar is all about.

IMO, you shouldn't buy a box until you have smoked at least 3-4, and you know that you will like them. When you have found a favorite, THEN check auctions or sales until the thing is available at a discount. Two doesn't work; if you buy two, one is good, the other mediocre, how do you know which best represents what will be in a box?

Seriously. The last thing you want to do is find out some day that you have $1,000 invested in box after box of mediocre cigars that you bought on a whim that you have no intention of ever smoking.
