Camacho American Barrel Aged Perfecto Gordo
This cigar has a slightly rustic corojo wrapper with a leathery aroma. The bunch is firm but not hard. The cold draw is perfect. Today’s beverage is a cold Topo Chico.
After lighting the perfecto tip I am immediately reminded of how much I enjoy this blend. The initial flavors are espresso and cocoa with a leathery finish. The smoke is very smooth and has just a touch of pepper in the retrohale. The burn is taking a bit of time to get past the tip so it can even out. The ash is light grey and solid looking. As expected, the burn evens out once it gets past the taper. The ash is more layered than solid but isn’t flaky and is holding firm. This is a very full bodied cigar, although the smoke is very smooth. The flavor profile turns bittersweet in the first third, blending well with the coffee and cocoa. Some swelling just below the band has developed causing some cracks in the wrapper. During the second third the v-cut starts to get tar build up requiring frequent purging to keep the draw open; I should have used a flat cut. The flavors remain complex and pleasant and the burn is steady as it passes the wrapper cracks. The Topo Chico is refreshing, but this cigar would pair better with a heavy beer. Removing the band as carefully as possible still causes more damage to the wrapper, but the burn soldiers through, remaining even. The ash remains very firm. The only real issue I have with the construction is the wrapper damage, which I have not experienced with the traditional vitolae in this blend. Approaching the final inch the complexity of flavors remains excellent. I will stay with the straight cigars in the future, as this blend seems to not do well with tapering. Still, an exceptional blend of flavors will keep me smoking the American Barrel Aged. 8.75/10, Joe Bob says check it out.
