Redwood in a humidor?

So last night I went to a cigar lounge that has been open a year or so, and I get to talking with the owner about his walk in. Being in the middle of a little project of my own, I asked him where he got the wood to line it with. He names a local lumberyard, and says that they know him by name now and hand pick his lumber because they kow how particular he is.......

so I ask him what kind of wood he had, knowing full well that it wasnt SC or mahogany......

he proceded to tell me the wood in there is actually the second lining for that humi. First he said he had put marine grade mahogany plywood in there. I had to refrain from laughing at that point. Well, it didnt take him long to realize you can't use marine grade plywood in a humi! His customers eyes were watering from all the formaldehyde! So he said he tore that out and now has redwood lining the entire room, which is about 15'x8'

Honestly, that is the first time I have heard of someone using redwood in a humi.....my first instinct would be to run far away from redwood lining.....but what say you experts out there?

I don't know about redwood but I am curious why he would be so cheap as to not go for spanish cedar or honduran mahogany like nearly every other retailer? For a cigar retailer, isn't where and how you store your merchandise one of the most important details? Doesn't seem like the proper area to skimp on. Of course, I could be wrong and redwood could be just fine. I'm curious to hear more from those who know these things.

According to eduardo, Carmack's in Noblesville, IN actually used aromatic cedar panels (closet lining), but I haven't been back to verify.

Redwood isn't an aromatic as far as I know. It contains little or no pitch or resin. It's also very stable. In a desktop or chest humidor, it wouldn't do much for you. But in a walk-in where there is a large humidifier, I'd think it would be okay.

You would have to think it's just wood for show. Spanish Cedar is something you want to have contact with your cigars. In a walk-in - your cigars will still be in their boxes. It's like lining a coolador with spanish cedar. You can do it, but it really doesn't have an effect.

I'm not sure about the aroma, it would seem to be fairly neutral.

I would think that the cost would be on par with the spanish cedar.

I needed a few pieces of redwood siding for the house, just to replace a few pieces that were beyond repair.

Armed guards escorted me to that section of the local lumberyard.

I work in the softwood lumber business. Now granted I am the bean counter but I deal with the wood a bit. First for the price of redwood, a softwood, why not use meranti mahogony or spanish cedar? Especially if the redwood has value added (been processed). Mahogany and SC are hardwoods that won't expand, warp, bow, check, or split to the extent redwood will in the humid environment. I am assuming there is no finish on it like you would put on siding or furniture to protect it from the moisture. I personally would never use a softwood to line a humidor. We cut a unit of redwood yesterday that was over 200 years old. Talk about beautiful lumber.

As far as the aromatic cedar issue. WRC is great for lining your smoke room/sauna, closet, sock drawer, but not your humidor.
