Salt Test Hygrometers
It is important to salt test your manual and digital hygrometers to insure your cigars are in proper humidity levels in your humidor.
I recently started using a new humidor and loaded it with cigars. The digital hygrometer that came with the humidor read 64%. But the feel of the cigars felt like they were over humidified. So I did a salt test. After 24 hours in a ziplock bag, the humidity level should have read 75%. It read 63%. So the cigars in the humidor was was actually in a 76% humidity environment. A bit too high for cigars. Salt test your hygrometers and don't risk ruining your cigars because of an inaccurate hygrometer. Link to how to do the salt test. https://ruuvi.com/how-to-calibrate-a...midity-sensor/ |

your post is right on for a never ending problem. after years of struggling with this, as i know many have and do, i've come to the conclusion that there just aren't many decent hygrometers available unless you're willing to spend hundreds of bucks. i've moved exclusively to the boveda 65% packs and feel like i've got the problem under control. i just replace every so often and don't think about them otherwise. i feel like my cigars are right where i want them to be. i don't even have a hygrometer in my humidor any more.

Boveda packs are a great and super easy way to keep your cigars in good smoking condition. No fuss and no mess. Set and forget.

What's the timeframe for re-testing?
I should probably just go ahead and do it.

I retest every 2 years. I have digital hygrometers that are 15 + years old and they are still the same as the first time I tested them.
