Nothing to worry about. The caking process is happens naturally. You reall don't want the cake to get much thicker than the thickness of a nickle. The bowl of the pipe expands while it is warm but so does the cake. If the cake is thicker than the a nickle it will expand faster and farther than the briar can. This puts pressure on the walls of the pipe. After a few years you will see cracks on the outside of the bowl.
