Favorite Green Bean offered by Sweet Marias

I'm looking to get into homeroasting and I was wondering what your guys' favorite green beans from Sweet Maria's are right now! I'm not a huge fan of earthy coffees, so what do you guys suggest I try?

We really like the low acitidy organic coffees. Sweet Maria's is always getting new green beans in stock so I usually read their reviews (which are super detailed) and pick a few.

I am all about trying new interesting things so I cant say I have many favorites yet.

Aaron. Have you ever tried using the COFFEE MATRIX at CBC? It can be a great tool
looking for what you want or don't want.
Scroll over the descriptions at the top for explanations.

Let me get this straight. CW's own Mister Starbucks is asking about green coffee from Sweet Maria's??!!?!?! Oh, I love the smell of irony in the morning!

But hey, if you're finally ready to find out how good coffee can really be, more power to ya!

From Sweet Maria's, try these:

Sumatra Lake Tawar 19+ Extra Bold

Yemen Mokha Ismaili

Ethiopia Harar Horse DP - Lot 17406

Guatemala Organic Finca Ceylan Maragogype

CBC also has (as always) some winners, which include the following:

Colombia Organic Bucaramanga - Mesa de los Santos

Guatemala Antigua - La Flor del Cafe

Indian Mysore "Extra Bold" Nuggets

Kauai Kahuna

Papua New Guinea Kimel A

Sumatra Lake Tawar Premium Lintong

That ought to keep you busy for a while...and make it just about impossible to drink anything sold by your employer.

Haha. Ohhhh how I knew that would come up! How about we classify this as "extending my education? " That way my manager wont get pissed (joke). Matt (Spork) has been talking to me about roasting for awhile now, and I am kind of in need of a new hobby...parents have all but eliminated being able to smoke (just for the time being), so this outta be a fun learning experience! I'm definitely going to try some of those suggestions MD..thanks for the list (and for going easy on me).

Still CW's Mister Starbucks,

Aaron

Aaron, I'm glad you have a sense of humor.

Seriously, though, education IS what it's all about. The more people learn about coffee, the better. The truth is that most Americans are utterly clueless, and will happily slurp up the most insipid swill just to get a caffeine fix.

A few comments on some of the beans I recommended:

Sumatra Lake Tawar (either): Unique among Sumatran coffees in my experience. Brighter than most, with less of the characteristic "forest floor funk,", and an underlying complexity that reminds me at times of some Central Americans. This one is not available every year, so grab some now!

Guatemala Antigua - La Flor del Cafe: Classic Guatemalan! Rich, complex, deep and flavorful. This is a personal favorite of mine, and the one variety I never let myself run out of.

Yemen Mokha Ismaili: A dry-processed coffee harvested from wild plants. Tiny beans exploding with flavors reminiscent of spices (cardamom, coriander, cloves). Unique and interesting stuff.

Ethiopia Harar Horse: Exceptional coffee, with characteristic blueberry notes. Also deep and rich.

Colombia Organic Bucaramanga - Mesa de los Santos: A Classic Colombian, clean and complex. Takes a wide variety of roasts.

Papua New Guniea Kimel A: A real insider's coffee, something of a trade secret among coffee aficionados. Similar in some ways to Sumatrans, yet smoother than most and with cocoa essences.

Indian Mysore "Extra Bold" Nuggets: Rich, complex, spicy. My favorite of the Indian offerings.

Kauai Kahuna: Another unique coffee. Huge beans, atypically affordable for a Hawaiian, though like most of those in being somewhat delicate and very clean. Nice!

Try all of these roasted just to the first snap of second crack. DO NOT do a "Starbucks roast" on ANY of them, or you'll destroy most of the varietal nuances that make them interesting.

Finally, please post your impressions after you've had a chance to try them. I'll be very interested to hear what you think about them, and about roasting your own.
