Seasons Greetings,

I'm a new cigar smoker and bought a Diamond Crown 70 count humidor with a Diamond Crown Humidifer which was set up to begin seasoning about 8 days ago. Also a Diamond Crown Hygrometer. When the humidity reached 64%, I added about 40 cigars and topped off the humidifier with distilled water. This humidifier does not require the 50/50 solution since it's a polymer material. This was 3 days ago. Early the next day, the humidity level was at 65% and has remained at this level since. It is not increasing. I would like it between 68% and 70%

Is this something I need to be concerned about, or does it just take more time for the humidity to increase?

65% is fine. Dont be so worried about the #'s. Smoke away!

65 is great if you like the way the cigars taste at 65 than smoke'em up

Thanks for the replies, but I'm too new to cigar smoking to know what humidity I like. Do I need to add something to get it up to 68% to 70% or just wait and it will get there on it's own? This humidifier is rated up to 100 cigars, so I don't understand why it's stuck on 65%.

You said the humidifier uses a polymer material. What RH is that polymer material set at? If it is anything like beads, it will be set at a specific RH, such as 65% or 70%. If it's set at 65% that would be the reason why you can't get the RH to go any higher.

Another problem is that your humi is only about half filled. Humidors work better when they are 2/3 full or more. You have a lot of air space in there right now. So now you have an excuse to go buy some more cigars.

Lastly, during the winter the RH of your house is very low - probably around 35%. This makes it difficult for the RH in your humi to get much higher than 65%. So, if your humi is staying at 65%, I wouldn't worry about it. It will probably go up in the Spring.

65% is perfect. I suspect your polymer is designed to hold 65%. The only way to raise the RH is to replace the polymer with 70%. It is my personal opinion that 70% is too high since cigars that are maintained at 70% tend to smoke tight and plug easier. That's just my opinion and my experience though.

Hey and welcome!

I used to keep all my cigars at 65% - 70%. I thought that it would give me more smoke, and I'd heard that 70/70 was the perfect way to keep them. If you like smoking them at that RH there's certainly nothing wrong with that.

Although I will say that ever since I started keeping my cigars at 55% - 60% I've noticed a lot less draw problems, less having to relight, and overall better flavor.

I personally think that anything below 60% is too low, unless we are talking Cubans. But that's a matter of preference. As for temp, it really doesn't matter as long as you keep the temp lower than 75. Yes, beetles can hatch at temps as low as 65, but you usually run into problem when temps go over 65.
