Amateur Review: Hine Rare VSOP (aka "Rare and Delicate
They may have changed the name because some manly men cigar smokers might have qualms about smoking a manly man cigar while drinking something "delicate"
Enjoyed with a Sancho Panza Valiente. My Impressions: Medium amber color. Pours light like pure alcohol or mineral spirits. Straightforward scent of flowers. A slight bite to a sweet rich pear attack that opens up with bitter almond, apples, and sugarcane. Not a very oaky cognac. Slight warmth and lingering body. Timely and thick finish with apple/raisin. This is entirely different from the tasting I got from the Hine "rare and delicate" I got at the store. I asked the clerk why they are stated to be the same cognac but the "R&D" had a intense body of litchees (!!) He could only say that the bottle in the store had been open a while. I tell you I wouldn't mind if my bottle developed some litchee (not leeches) flavors! Hine suggests a the Partagas Maduros. I found the yummy Sancho Panza @ <$3 a good partner, with its earthy coffee, molasses, hazelnut, and spice.
