2000 Consuegra #9 Maduro (Consuegra 93)

Villazon was killing it in the late 90s. There was something magical about the powerhouse blends Frank was turning out in Honduras, and his Punch, Hoyo, El Rey del Mundo, and JR Ults were full-on flavor bombs. But even though these cigars were all very reasonably priced, folks are always looking for deals.

In the halcyon days of Usenet, a fella by the name of Tom Mullaney had put together the definitive list of cigar “seconds” that broke the code on factory blems, blend mistakes, and overruns. He posted it on alt.smokers.cigars and guys were going nuts all over the country in a sort of cheapskate treasure hunt, trying to outdo each other to get, pardon the pun, smoking deals on premium cigars.

Connie 9s were the seconds of the Punch/Hoyo Robusto. At around $20 a bundle rhey were coveted. The Connie 73 was the El Rey del Mundo Robusto Larga, and the often unobtanium 84 was the ERdM Flor de Llaneza. These were all prized, but the 9s were a staple.

Most of us on the “boards” at the time were early sufferers of ODO - Order Disorder - and had cigars in flight almost every week. And In almost every order some Connies stowed away.

Oh, sure, there were differing opinions. Some thought they were hidden gems. Others thought they were cohete perro (dog rockets) and made fun of those of us hoarding them, but despite that they sold like hotcakes.

Before memes were even a thing, fvfanmc, Mike Cataldo, became internet famous for referring to Connies as tasting like “finely aged Cubans,” a term which was repeated for years!

I bought this cigar as part of a score in early 2001 when a lot of Villazon seconds were being blown out at fantastic prices. It’s been in some huge tubs of Connies in my humidor. Until it flew off to be savaged by Sean.
