A brand new "A Rich Pour" column for the Scotch 'e

A Rich Pour – Column No. 13: All For One & One For All

June 16th, 2008

In this instalment of A Rich Pour, Cigar Weekly Managing Editor Doug Kuebler (jazznut) offers up ideas and techniques for creating some very tasty whiskies at home as he addresses one of his favourite subjects, the blending of single malt Scotches.
If you've ever (or perhaps never) given a thought to blending your own pure malt whiskies, then hopefully I can shine a little light on the subject and persuade you to give it a try.

Check the Cigar Weekly Home Page and click on the appropriate link.

Douglas, you've messed my mind up for the rest of the day. At least what I had left of one. Will pour over this in detail later and over some blends samiam2.....

Although I don't typically spend over $100 per bottle, I can't even think of mixing two scotches, even at the $60ish I usually pay. What if it goes horribly badly? Also, the bottle of 15 year old Glenfiddich I recently purchased goes just fine by itself.

That said, I will certainly read your article and allow you to convince me.

Standard blended Scotch and pure malt vatted Scotch... 2 different beasts entirely, even if they do share the 'art' of blending.

My intent with the latest "A Rich Pour" column is to open peoples' eyes to both the feasibility and fun of trying their hands at blending together single malt whiskies at home.

I think I'm going to try awakening a Glenmorange 10 yr with a small amount of Laphroaig 10 yr of a Lagavulin. The Glenmorange seems dull sometimes if the stars are not alligned..What ya think Douglas...

With the Glenmorangie 10YO, you've picked an incredibly versatile Northern Highland single malt with which to 'play around with'.

My personal choice for embellishment purposes would be the Laphroaig, as its ex-Bourbon barrel vanilla overtones seem, to me, better matched to the nutty and spicy nuances of the Glenmorangie.

Go easy with the amount of Laprhoaig you add, and you should be onto something tasty.

Do you ever blend bourbons or American whiskeys?
