If you watch movies from the 1930s, there is an incredible amount of smoking and drinking. The appeal of drinking may be a result of the repeal of prohibition. Or, as I've seen positited, prohibition itself led to more drinking in the twenties. Either way there was a lot of it. It's also not uncommon to see a character smoke cigarettes, cigars and a pipe at various times. In the original American version of Godzilla, Raymond Burr does all three. The Phillip Marlowe books showcase this too.
