Watching GritTV on my "over the air" TV antenna has allowed me to see how much more smoking and drinking were shown back in the day. Not just Westerns, but all older programs.
It seems like that is all they did. Makes me want to try some more candelas myself.

Mad Men they were drinking so much I had to ask my mom if that was really how it was in the 50s and 60s. She said it depended on what field you were in. She worked in the front office of Meadow Gold dairy and said she didn't see much of it. She also said it was more prevalent in high stakes sales jobs, like advertising. Made sense to me, kinda like free drinks at casinos. Lowered inhibitions and all that.

If you watch movies from the 1930s, there is an incredible amount of smoking and drinking. The appeal of drinking may be a result of the repeal of prohibition. Or, as I've seen positited, prohibition itself led to more drinking in the twenties. Either way there was a lot of it. It's also not uncommon to see a character smoke cigarettes, cigars and a pipe at various times. In the original American version of Godzilla, Raymond Burr does all three. The Phillip Marlowe books showcase this too.
