You would still have the possibility of "tear out" going from the face side as well? going to slow while drilling could cause the bit to bite into the SC wood which is very soft and poris...

But you would want to use a pilot hole from the backside to line up the drill bit from the face as you said TBaGZ because if screws were used to hold the old wood in place.. they would have been countersunk? meaning the hole on the backside would not be as large as the countersunk hole on the face side?
