White Humidor
Hi gang. I'm looking for a white, glossy lacquer desktop humidor, preferably about 100-stick capacity, but size doesn't matter (at least in this case <g>). The only one I have been able to find is an Ashton, which lists for (gasp) $1800. Even at deep discount, it would still cost me close to a grand. I'm interested in something running maybe a couple-few hundred dollars. Any suggestions? TIA.
BTW, Please excuse the cross-post.

Buy a cheap normal one and get your hands dirty with a sander and white gloss paint.

I agree with JD. Unless you can live with some logos on your white humidor (I see some white humidors at JRs from time to time, but emblazoned with various logos like Montecristo White). If you aren't comfortable doing it yourself, find a local cabinet shop or similar to do it. Should cost a great deal less than a high end model with "custom" finish.

Check out the CAO Vision cigar boxes. You can usually pick up one on ebay for nothing. They have a built in humidification device and a digital hygrometer (I think).

Here is the only mercifully priced white one I've seen recently:

Cigarella has some beautiful Montecristo White humidors she'd probably be willing to part with for under $25 plus shipping. They are all white and have the Montecristo logo on the top.

Other than that, I suggest that you do it yourself. Find the best humi you can get, that fits your desires. Make sure that the surface is smooth enough to suit you in the first place, as the paint will not hide any imperfections. Use an epoxy paint. Don't scrimp, and make sure that you use the spray very carefully to avoid drips or other imperfections. Use a "deglosser." This is a chemical that eats at the initial finish, and allows a paint to adhere to a finish that was originally far too smooth for a new coat. Otherwise, a thorough roughing up with a coarse scotch brite pad will do an ecxellent job of roughing the original coat to the point that it can be painted over. If you sand or abrade, make absolutely certain by using a tack cloth or other completely dust free cloth that there is not a speck of lint or dust on the thing, and then paint. Dust or pops can be sanded off with 4-800 grit sand paper on blocks. Use a water based poly to top coat it if you choose to, after a light scuffing with 400 grit and another careful dusting. Once you have put on a base coat paint, you could actually add any art work or labels to it that you wanted to. It raises possibilities. BTW, I suggest that you dissasemble it, and paint top and bottom separately, at the very least, use good masking tape to completely cover all exposed surfaces that would be ruined when paint inevitably seeps into the gap between lid and base. |
