Here is my 2 cents.
The tobaccos in cigars age and mingle together over time. As they do so they release ammonia. It's quite possible that the cigars in question had a slight 'urine' aroma, maybe even unnoticeable, because the tobacco was young/under aged and it seemed bitter.
