Newton: least of AU's problems...UPDATED

If this is all true. This is a very interesting link (long) from Tiger Droppings.

http://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/m...asp?p=22778676

The involvement of the FBI, indicates there is a lot more going on, than just the Cam Newton angle. I think this is far, far more than just a smear campaign....
if even some of the allegations are true (and not just involving Newton) Auburn is in some serious shit.

Does this mean, that Auburn is the ONLY university that has (allegedly) committed serious violations, of course not..they just got caught.

Another blurb, is the FBI was investigating Colonial bank, and the the Newtons just got involved at the wrong time.

It's pretty long, and I do not verify or say that any of this is true.

I do think at least some of the issues with Cam Newton are true. There are just too many named sources, reporting too much.

One of the worst parts to me, is IF...I stress IF....this is true, and AU has an ineligible player (at least) ...the investigation may not be complete before the NCG....and it would be a shame for AU to go, and "win" the title", and have to vacate it later....thus depriving another team of a chance to go.

Just my opinion, even if Newton is ruled ineligible BEFORE the NGC....there may be much more to come out, and it will take months..and months, if not a couple of years.

The kid's family definitely got paid. Every big school does it. NCAA must be hoping like hell for Bama to knock off Auburn and keep them out of title game. Then the LSU fans will say they belong, but they don't. If Oregon wins out, let them play TCU or Boise. If TCU and Boise are the lone undefeated teams, let them play for title. Auburn is going to get burned over this and Newton better start prepping for NFL draft.

The sad part is, Newton will likely be a multi-millionaire this time next year and AU will likely be on probation.

I agree, that AU isn't the ONLY school that has allegedly paid players, but they got caught this time.

Try this one. It flows from the FBI investigation of Milton McGregor, a major Auburn booster. Apparently the Newtons, and with them Auburn, could merely collateral damage from an ongoing federal investigation.

"McGregor and 10 others are scheduled for arraignment Friday morning in federal court in Montgomery on charges accusing them of buying and selling votes on pro-gambling legislation.

The bigger picture here is that the Feds have been investigating Milton McGregor (A major Auburn Booster and the owner of VictoryLand, which is located just outside of Montgomery) for quite some time. The Feds are investigating efforts to pass gambling legislation in Alabama and money laundering schemes involving McGregor and other prominent Alabama politicians and Auburn boosters.

The Feds have tape from wire taps made on McGregor and other prominent Auburn boosters from their investigation. The Newton's were just shopping their talent's to the wrong people at the wrong time and thus there is hard evidence available that incriminates everyone involved. It's only a matter of time that all of this information becomes public.

FBI found out about Cam before the NCAA did while wiretapping Milton McGregor and others related to the casino/bingo indictments. They uncovered conversations with McGregor, Auburn and Cam's uncle in Michigan. McGregor paid $250K to the uncle through a PAC and other hidden entities and the uncle funneled the money to Cecil.

The FBI gave this information to the NCAA sometime after the indictments were handed down. They had to sit on the information for 6 months until the grand jury indicted the men and women in the gambling deal. All of the wiretap information was sealed and that is why the delay in investigating. The NCAA had to go to Miss St to see if Cecil had solicited money from them as well. That is why Miss St is involved. They are basically connecting all of the dots. Miss St may be cleared because they told Cecil no. He then went to Auburn. The offer was on the table from McGregor but Cam wanted to play at Miss St and not Auburn. When Miss St declined to pay him, he went to where the money was... hence the comment, "The money was too much." The FBI met with the Miss St coaches, John Bond and Bill Bell today to get their official statements."

This is from the main Rivals.com recruiting board. I saw it on GoPowerCat.com the Kansas State Rivals board. In the interest of full disclosure, it was posted by an Alabama fan known as All-Day UA.

If.... and I say IF.... all this is true, Auburn's punishment by the NCAA is gonna make the USC sanctions look like a slap on the wrist. And the Newton's are in deep criminal shit if they took laundered money.

The same thread from TigerDroppings, the LSU board, that is linked above is linked on GoPowerCat the KSU board.

Here's a summary by one of the more respected posters from GoPowerCat:

"The gist is this...

There is a group of men, lead by Bobby Lowder (founder and CEO of the failed Colonial BancGroup) that have exerted a tight control of almost all facets of Auburn University through their involvement as the university's Board of Trustees. This level of control supersedes that of the University President to the point where they can essentially have him hired and fired.

Now, what makes it really shady is the fact that Lowder allegedly used his influence over fellow members of his board of trustees by giving them sweetheart loan deals and other financial incentives. Essentially, he used his $25 billion dollar company to gain control over Auburn, and many of his tentacles were embedded deeply into the football program. He hired and fired a bunch of "yes men" to make sure his pay-for-play programs stayed intact.

One of the main vehicles of his scheme apparently included a big, big Auburn booster by the name of Milton McGregor. McGregor owned and operated a very large casino operation in Alabama called "Victoryland". They believe a lot of the cash used to pay players came from here because of how much cash goes in and out of a casino on a daily basis, making it easy to skim some out of there and keep player payments off of the books. What makes McGregor's involvement really interesting is that he was arrested on 10/4 this year in a very large conspiracy where he used his money to buy votes for pro-gambling legislation in Alabama.

Long story short, they think there are wire-tap conversations connecting Cecil Newton and McGregor regarding Cam getting paid due to the fact that the government was wire-tapping him for a year period for the whole political mess. They believe that the FBI is involved because they think they can follow the money trail back to Lowder, exposing extremely large corruption in the Auburn Board of Trustees using Colonial BancCorp funds to pay for players in a multitude of ways, which will have implications with the FDIC because of the failure of that particular bank.

So, in summation, this goes way beyond Cam Newton. The FBI is trying to nail Lowder for massive bank fraud, and Newton's recruitment was so sloppy that they think they finally have something they can use to tie Lowder to a massive pay-for-play scheme using ColonialBank funds which will impact the federal government's responsibility for FDIC reimbursements for his failed bank.

The worst-case scenario for Auburn is that if all of this is true, there is a good chance that the SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) will revoke their accreditation because of another scandal involving Lowder and the Board of Trustees back in 2001 where they almost had their accreditation yanked after Lowder and the BoT basically ousted the university president because of his objection to pay-for-play football. If Auburn loses their SACS accreditation, they're looking at possibly getting kicked out of the SEC.

That's a very short summation, but the potential ramifications of this for Auburn University are enormous. It makes what's going on at KU child's play."

Even if only partially true, Auburn appears to be royally buggered.
