I put my old butts and ashes in a coffee can with a plastic lid.

butts and ashes get tossed on the lawn and then mowed over once a week. I remember reading that tobacco was used by organic gardeners as a pesticide and now neonicotinoids are a common pesticide*. Didn't know about the virus connection.
*neonicotinoids- Maybe related to the honeybee disappearance http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/PI117

We keep a garbage can on the deck specifically for baby's poopy diapers, so I dump ashes & butts in there; it couldn't possibly smell any worse.
