are beads made of the same stuff that those tubes with the gelatinous rocks have or any other similar thing? - NO, the beads are silica gel (though not actually a "gel" at all)
What makes them better than oasis foam? - More dependable RH level and protection against over humidification. No need for PG is a tremendous plus. For some reason it seems more reasonable that PG is scientifically a safe bet for adding and removing humidity than beads, and this post shows that. - Not even close. Silica beads outperform PG solutions in every aspect and by a large margin. Also beads arent cheap either. - In the long run, beads are cheaper than nearly any other humidity control scheme. Are beads like all the other gellatinous types where they only last a year? - No, they last indefinitely. Actually I think alot of the gelatin ones actaully have PG inside them. - Normally the "gel" type are polymethacrylate polymer, having no ability to absorb excess humidity. They do not normally contain PG. There are those who add it, but that is another tale
