Shuriken Cutters

What is the deal with these? Is this just a novelty item?

I was gifted one of these and the thought of it was really cool....until I got about a 1/3 of the way through a cigar. Tar bubbles galore, sour and bitter taste in my mouth, and then it was plugged.

Not a fan, just saying.

Seems awfully gimmicky to me.

FWIW, I've tried many different cutters over the years. Then I got a Palio, and I quit looking. Perfect cut, every time.

BTW - the tar and plugging issues you experienced had nothing to do with the cut and everything to do with the cigar. I'll go so far as to speculate that it was either a Dominican puro or had a large component of Dominican tobacco in the blend. I've only had oozing tar from Dominicans, and Opus X have been, by far, the worst offenders.

kind of a novelty way to get a punch cut..

the tar/nasty thing we have discussed here. although a punch cut seems to be part of it, I am not sure it is all of it. I havehad it happen with all sorts of cuts. My current theory is a stem or someting gets very hot and the tar comes flowing.

I've had tar issues with Romeo y Julieta Reserva as well, but that is a good cigar. I've tried that Shuriken on a few cigars, it is that, imo, the slits are too small, so they build up quick. It has provided a great draw on each cigar I've tried with it, which is nice.

I'm a big fan of the V-cut and already have my share of 2-blade, but I'll keep that on the radar for when I need another one.

I have never been a huge fan of the V-cut......until this past week. I tried the Xikar version, really liked it. Xikar made a very simple, yet effective change in the design by inverting the blade. This seems to make for a cleaner cut, reduce the likelihood of "tearing", etc...
Worth checking out, especially if you prefer the V-cut.
MD, one of these days I'm going to pick up a Palio, I've never heard anything but the highest praise for their product.

I started out with the cheapo gimmie guillotine-style cutters. My first good cutter was a Xicar Xi, one of the originals with the Solingen steel blades. I still have that one.

I also still have my Swiss Army Knife cutter, which is simply excellent.

I rarely use either of those since I got a Palio. It may look like "just another guillotine cutter," but it's not. Perfectly flat cut, every time. Gets my highest recommendation!

I have 2 of the Xikar regular cutters and love them both. Their lighters are good also. The v-cutter would make a great gift. I think I'll wait until the new year to get one for myself!
