As my Cajun wife explained it to me she said " you dance when you're free". I've heard the stories about how poor her family was even 3 generations ago (and trust me, they took that passage from Genesis about being "fruitful and multiply" quite seriously...all of the last generation had at least 8 kids and the current generation is following suit. This is a very complex family tree that I have a devil of a time keeping track of).
Bottom line is that they were poor and making music and dancing was free and it made them feel freer. I can understand that. Respect it too. Music and food are a huge part of daily life in South Louisiana. It's a very rich culture. If it wasn't for fucking hurricanes, I'd still be living the high life there. It pains me that my wife is so far apart from her family, which is a really big deal and (used to be) a great joy to her. Her family is really fun bunch of people to gather with. And they can REALLY cook!
