Shall I give it another try?

Hi
My husband smokes pipes and cigars. I love the smell of the pipe tobacco and wanted to give it a go. I tried the pipe once. I didn't care for the taste of the pipe itself and maybe was expecting more flavor from the tobacco. Do you think his pipe might have needed to be cleaned?
What tobacco would you suggest for a newbie at pipe smoking. I just think it would be a nice change from a cigar.
