I think you missed a very important advantage of PG and that is that it's a superior mold retardent in addition to being a humidity regulator. As far as I am concerned, silica gel's biggest plus is that it can be used to lower RH. For this purpose, plain old Fresh Step cat litter will suffice. Overall silica gel requires more maintenance that other type of humidifyig media. Periodically, we read about problems associated with its use. Mold is one example.
