I just finished a Montecristo Especial No. 1. I firmly believe nobody in the world can make a long panatella like the Cubans can. This is a very difficult vitola to roll well to due it's length (7 1/2") and narrow ring gauge (38).
This sample was from a box coded EAR ABR01. I got it a couple of weeks ago and it's been sitting in the cooler settling down from its journey. Generally, the cigars in this box seem soft to the touch. I was a little nervous about how it would smoke. I cut off the pigtail and took a test draw. Not surprisingly, it was a bit tight but it didn't feel plugged. I torched to foot and took a puff. Man, what a wonderful cigar. It had a delicious smooth creamy taste that lasted the first half. The second half kicked in with some power and spice. Draw remained somewhat tight (but not plugged) throughout the cigar but burn was very even. Ash was a bit flakey but that is typical of this vitola. This was the second Monte Esp No. 1 I've smoked. The first was one was a gift and was plugged. But this was one was very enjoyable. Like the Cohiba Lancero and Trinidad Fundadores, this Monte was like 2 completely different cigars between the first and second half. That's what I love about this vitola.
