Camacho Connects with the New SLR

Camacho's newest blend, the SLR.
Camacho's Corojo and Havana lines can best be described in strength as a solid 1-2 punch. Now a new line has been thrown into the mix like an extra shot for good measure -- the Camacho Special Limited Reserve.

In the tradition of Camacho power, the Special Limited Reserve cigars (abbreviated down to "SLR") are full-bodied smokes. Available since November, they have hit the market in a limited capacity; only about 300 retailers will have the cigars this year.

The SLR secures its strength from a tobacco seed that the Eiroa family, which grows and makes the cigars, is calling pinareño. Like most of the seeds grown in Central America, the pinareño seed hails from the Pinar del Río region of Cuba. The term is used by Cubans to refer to a person who comes from that area, which is known for growing the island's best cigar tobacco. Today, the Eiroa's company, Tabacos Ranchos Jamastran, grows the seed in the Jamastran Valley of Honduras. (The company also grows all of the tobacco used in the company's other cigar brands, from Camacho Havana to La Fontana and Baccarat.) The company also makes the cigars in a factory in Danlí, Honduras.

According to a statement from Christian Eiroa, president of the Eiroa's Miami distribution company, Caribe Imported Cigars, his late grandfather, Generoso Eiroa, began using pinareño seed while working for the Cuban-Land & Leaf Tobacco Co. in the 1920s. Generoso had grown the seed on his farm called La Victoria (named after his wife). Decades later, the tobacco blend has emerged in the form of the SLR line.

The Camacho Special Limited Reserve comes in four sizes. The Corona measures 5 1/2 inches with a ring gauge of 44 and retails for $5.50; the Rothschild is 6 inches by 50 ring and costs $5.95; the Toro is 6 inches by 50 ring and is priced at $6.20; and the Torpedo measures 6 inches by 54 ring with a retail price of $6.95.
