Henry's has gotten a reputation for being over-priced and over-yuppied. Beer selections like that are not really unusual in the area -- Dublin Pub had 100+ beers starting 10 years back -- and there certainly are places with very good selections of local beers. Not a lot of them are cigar-friendly, unfortunately.
The real problem with that many taps is that there isn't enough turnover on most of them to keep the beer fresh. A few of the most popular beers, yes, but most will be sitting there for weeks, and frequently, your beer is actually sitting in the lines before it's poured for you. Next time you have lunch in Portland, check out Higgins. Incredible food and a very choice selection of beers, including Belgian ales served in the proper glass. Or get down to the Pilsner Room, which not only has a great selection, but has the best selection of Full Sail speciality beers, brewed right next door and unavailable anywhere else. Summertime seating outside is awesome, with many beautiful sights walking down the promenade. Cigars are OK except from 6-10 pm, even indoors (where they have great ventilation). Indoor seating during happy hour offers the best possible food practically given away, and usually a gorgeous waitress to bring your beer. Parking sucks. And, of course, there's the Horse Brass, where the food ranges from OK to good, the beer selection is always excellent and the air is rancid with smoke. What can I say? Too many cigarettes in there, but cigars are welcome. |
