Breaking the stem is a hard lesson to learn. I always grab my pipe by the bown to knock out any remaining dottle. If a cork knocker isn't handy I'll knock it on my knee or shoe bottom.
Many years ago when working at a Tinder Box in Oklahoma City we were farting around during a slow period. A friend was swinging a yardstick and it caught the bit of the Savinelli Churchwarden I was smoking (the very early '80s, way before The Lord of The Rings). Needless to say he paid for a new stem but it wasn't the same.
