ZILZIE 2007 SELECTION 23
Murray Valley, Victoria
14.5%$10-$12
86 points
From a range of value-laden drinks out of their Karadoc winery, Zilzie's workman shiraz is a crimson-toned, light-to-medium-bodied little bottler with nice plums and spicy edges, looking for bratwursts on rolls to fulfil its dream role. Look for other Zilzie cheapies, merlot and sangiovese, at the $15 mark.

K1 SAUVIGNON BLANC
Adelaide Hills

Always exciting to see the new vintage arrive in a bottle, and here we go with the aromatic whites, full of bracken and bushiness, leafy and heady, then tropical fruit salad flavours over a fine talc-textured undercarriage. Lots of fun in this style range, especially with a no-nonsense party animal like this.

CARRICKALINGA CREEK 2005 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Southern Fleurieu
14.5%$17-$21
90 points
From a fledgling vineyard between Normanville and Yankalilla, this has all its varietal hallmarks, a touch of minty herbaceousness with black-currant-cordial aromatics, a short stick of licorice lurking behind the scenes and trademark soft tannins around the mouth. Keep an eye on this region's cabernets, as well as this producer's chardonnay/viognier blend.

PEWSEY VALE 2007 PRIMA RIESLING
Eden Valley
9.5%$24.95
94 points
Sealed under a VinoLok glass stopper, this represents the first fruit of the 2007 vintage picked from Yalumba's Eden Valley vineyards and shows pristine citrus juice aromas, then a wonderful burst of lemon-honey sweetness in the mouth while keeping in touch with the crisp acidity riesling fans adore. This naturally sweeter style is the big new thing and worth celebrating here. Bravo.

2% 2005 SHIRAZ
Barossa Valley
14.5%$35
93 points
One of a hootin' bunch of intriguing wines from young gun winemaker Matt Gant and winery partner John Retsas, using many fringe varieties. Here, traditional northwest Barossa shiraz gets a little kick from a 2 per cent addition of Spanish original alborino, now also showing well in the Barossa. This is soft-plum fruited with plenty of cigar tobacco spice and beautifully medium bodied. Lush.

CHAPEL HILL 2006 BUSH VINE GRENACHE
McLaren Vale

From a couple of parcels of 45-year-old and 80-year-old bush vines, this seems fairly closed to begin. Light cherry juices at best, but in the mouth there's a complete turnaround, packing in dense, almost meaty complexities, lovely tannin coverage and good red-berry flavours seeking a spiced tagine for a full and frank partnership.
