Billie Holiday was abused through much of her life, was turning tricks as a teenager, spent time in jail, and was a junkie for a good portion of her life. Her hard life is evident in every note she sings. While her voice doesn't have the quality of, say, Sarah Vaughan, it transmit a feeling that nobody has since come close to capturing.
