Hi, it's been awhile since I did anything in the workshop. My Son-in-law expressed an interest in having a stand so I picked one out for him.
It's another horse handle ashtray with a large (8") insert. Someone had painted this a uniform gold color. The paint seemed pretty solid so I cleaned it and worked it over with some fine steel wool to prep for new paint. The lower double horse head section was fine. Just needed cleaning and buffing. Only thing I stripped was the handle. Turned out to be silver toned. Whatever it is (pot metal, lead?), it's solid. I just hand buffed it with fine steel wool to a shine. Here's a before pic. I long ago decided that a two tone paint scheme is more interesting and gives the piece pizzazz. The black rings are done freehand with an acrylic paint. Pretty happy with this one! |

Hi, I did a couple more ashtray stands at the tail end of summer. Gonna try selling them on eBay.
Up first is the ubiquitous gazelle handle stand. It has some nice art deco elements that I tried to highlight with a two-tone paint scheme. Probably a 20s-30s piece. The amber tray has a neat pebbled bottom. As they often are, this next one was painted a uniform gold. I was surprised to find that when I stripped the base, the top of it was polished brass. Took a bit of work to remove corrosion and pitting. Scars still show. But it will develop a nice patina over time and has a nice antique look. This screams art nouveau era to me. I figure 1900-1910. Could be earlier. The solid base must have been expensive to make. I've had several of them. These had rose tinted clear glass inserts. Very thin and fragile. I've only ever seen one. And the guy I sold it to promptly broke it. But this amber glass is a good fitting replacement. Alot more durable too. |
