Creating Indoor Smoking Lounge

So,

I'm currently discussing with SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) about using our downstairs family room as my cigar lounge, so I can enjoy the TV and a cigar, or just plain not be outside when it's 20 or 100 degrees out.

I've decided on using a pressure rod to hold a curtain up to block most of the smoke from exiting the area (it's got a doorway-sized opening to a short hallway, which leads to the utility room, bathroom, and upstairs - we're in a split level).

There's an air return in the room, but it's covered with a standard vent which can be closed (there are other returns, so no worries about killing the furnace).

I've already decided to get 3M's Filtrete 1900 or 2200 - series air filters for whatever smoke *does* get out.

The last question is on air filtration.

I've smoked a couple of times in that room, and some, but not a lot, of smell gets throughout the house. Those times I did smoke, I used one of those stand-up fans on low or medium (but dang was it loud!), and it got some of the smoke out, but the missus still smelled it.

I've done a bunch of research, but would like to know what others are using - so far, I've found two air purifiers I like, so I'm looking for your experiences with each:

1. Sharp KC-860u
2. Rabbit Air Minus2A-780

The Sharp is $429, the Rabbit Air (RA) is around $550, both on Amazon. Filters for the Sharp around around $150, $80 for the RA ones.

Does anyone have personal experience with either?

Thanks,

-John

Check out the Cedar Room forum for more ideas.

I personally don't use an air purifier. I have a large exhaust fan in the ceiling venting into the attic. When I'm done smoking, I just spray some Fabreez around the room.

In the house I live in now, I'm getting ready to build a smoking room. I think I'll invest in some sort of air purifier also.

Thanks - my wife's office and our bedroom are above, and it's also drywalled in. I'd like to avoid the loud, noisy fans if possible. The tentative agreement we have is that I'm good to smoke as long as the smell doesn't get into other areas of the house, as it has in the past few times I've smoked in that room.

Get a good CARBON filter, or carbon embedded filter, for your furnace.
i don't smoke in the house, but I have them/use them in my furnace when I cook fish in the house...

Both of my top picks have carbon or charcoal filters.

I'm also hanging a curtain to separate the room.

The last line of defense is a carbon furnace filter - 3M Filtrete 1900 or 2200.

The room has a closable air return.

Csonka makes a worthy air deodorizer

Yeah, I found an Arm & Hammer - impregnated curtain, so I'll give that a shot.

Unfortunately there's no door to seal this area off.

Have a look at some comparisons here:

Yeah, I've seen that page - they don't even mention the two I'm looking at. Say what you will about Cigar Aficianado, but they've reviewed and like both. I was hoping some of my fellow BOTLs had actually bought one of them and tried it out. StogieReview.com did a review of the Rabbit Air purifier, but CA seems to like the Sharp products better, which has left me somewhat undecided.

Bingo. You need to get the smoke out. That's the key. Leather furniture will also help. Filtering the air or cleaning it won't do it. There's just too much. You need to vent the smoke out of the room.
