If music is, indeed, distilled emotion

Then Ravel's Bolero is a dirge leading up to his own execution. As much as I admire Blake Edwards, he got it all wrong in 10 making it erotic.

May be the saddest piece of music ever written. Hard for me to imagine it as anything other than the theme he would have written leading up to his trip to the Guillotine. Even written 150+ years after that era.
Unconventional wisdom is seldom either.

Every time you think you've become too cynical, the world finds a way to teach you that the real problem is that you haven't become cynical enough

Free speech is free speech is free speech. There is no qualifier.

If you aren't outraged, you aren't paying attention.

Never attribute malice to that what can be explained as stupidity.

Sad with a bit more substance: Listen to Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor
"Moderation in all things. Excess in everything else."

As far as Ravel goes, I much, much prefer "Daphis et Chloe".
...the gas chambers of Auschwitz, Treblinka, and Maidanek were ultimately prepared not in some ministry or other in Berlin, but rather at the desks and in the lecture halls of nihilistic scientists and philosophers.
