replacing plexi w/glass

So a thought occured to me - I have this humidor (thanks J!) that had a piece of PLEXI in it.

I've taken that out, and while I could go get one, it also occured to me to grab some GLASS.

But the glazing compound that they use to seal it, and hold it in... will that spew out chemicals that will make my cigars rat ass nasty>?

I'm sure there is some compound you could use that would be okay. This would be a good question for Arlin Liss or Bob Staebell.

Sorry, BigJohn, I should have provided more information. They're both professional humidor makers and members of CW. Screennames: Arlin and Bob Staebell.

If that doesn't work, here are their websites.

I didn't use glazing compound or sealant of any kind with mine. It butts up against Spanish cedar at the lid top. And spanish cedar strips hold the glass in place. After 12 years it appears to leak not at all.

If you're really worried about it, how about afixing narrow strips of duct tape at the inside hole edge. Or maybe at the glass edge where it won't show. The tape is soft and will aid in sealing. no chemical off-gassing either.

Not knowing anything really about your situation, I still feel confident that you could use a bead of standard silicone sealer to hold it in.

Silicone gives off a buttload of acetic acid as it sets. It doesn't have any other compounds that it releases that I am aware of.

I figure that if you can use a pound and a half of it to assemble and seal an aquarium, I think that a few beads of it can be used to lock glass to a wooden humidor lid.

Just leave the thing open for a week or so to let all of that acid work its way out.
