Somebody asked me a awhile back how Alabama got its nickname
And I just looked it up in the ESPN college football encyclopedia.
The Crimson part came from the color of the stockings they wore in early days. Sometime around 1900, a sportswriter began to refer to them from a Kipling poem titled "The Thin Red Line". Another sportswriter in a wet game turned the red line moving down the field into a tide. How did they get the elephant for a mascot? The 1930 team (undefeated and Rose Bowl champs) was very large by the standards of the day. When Alabama took the field against Mississippi, a MS fan shouted "Hold your horses, the elephants are coming"
