2001 Montecristo Peruvian Especial No.2

Outside in my favorite spot in the glass, semi-enclosed smoke shack.

No beverage today.

Sunny, 51 degrees and 52% relative humidity.

An attractive Colorado Maduro. Fine textured, rich, dark, oily appearance, with a smooth cap, firm bunch, nearly invisible seams, and only one thin vein visible.

Typically not one to fall for advertising or gimmicks, but must say the three-quarters, yellow box caught my attention and intrigued me, along with the unboxed cigar itself.

Very appealing look and feel.

Even burn, flat coal, white, flakey loose ash.

Easy draw, faint, subtle but fragrant aroma with no burn on tongue or throat.

Medium richness, one dimensional balance, mild strength and body, and musty, grassy, metallic flavor, with the fresh grassy flavor being very dominant.

No sweetness, saltiness, with no sharpness or burn on tongue, but a very pronounced bitterness that lingered as a very noticeable aftertaste.

Overall, a lackluster, common character and mild body.

The fresh, bitter grassiness dominated the taste and left a strong bitter aftertaste.

Either was never a particularly good cigar, or it simply didn't age well.

Appearance, draw, burn and aroma were very good though, causing me to expect a much better smoke than it was unfortunately.

I'd call it fair at best overall, and only because of the draw, burn, aroma, feel and appearance. Otherwise I would have called it a dog rocket for sure.

Total Score: 66 out of 100
