1998 Hoyo de Monterrey Petit

A 4.75x31 little cigar, with a tan, natural wrapper, medium texture, medium smoothness cap, and a firm, lumpy bunch.

Burn was very even, coal was flat, ash was gray with typical structure.

Draw was perfect with ample smoke volume.

Aroma was faint and subtle and no burn in the throat.

Flavor was medium and one dimensional, and of medium strength and body, consisting of grassy, woody and aged flavors.

No sweetness, sharpness, burn on tongue or saltiness and a light bitterness.

Character was common, but agreeable with medium body.

Overall, it was good, with a total score of 90 out of 100.

Yeah, it certainly wasn't something I would buy, but given its extreme age, and possibly not having been particularly good when it was young, it was better than the vast majority of the ones in that age range i was given to review.

It still had some flavor other than just aged tobacco and mustyness like most have had, so in comparison it deserved a higher score. Also it scored well in all the non-taste/flavor categories, so that helps a lot.

Compared to all other aged cigars I have ever had, it would score lower, but i wanted to keep it in comparison only with its contemporary ones.
