H.A.W. Quartersawn Oak Desktop Humidor
This box has some really great quartersawn oak. I believe I just refreshed the original finish. It probably dates from about 1900.
Looking back from this vantage point in time, I can honestly say I wouldn't change a thing about this interior. It looks exactly right. Engraving is done by hand on this nameplate. Look at that detail! It's definitely a lost art. |

Does that look like the finish on a singer?

Quarter sawn oak in a dark cabinet, sometimes very nice.

Yes, that wood says craftsman. The difference is that singer used a lot of complex curves that went along with the curves that had to be used to enhance the curves of both the wheel and the machine. The overall look is very much like the edge of craftsman and maybe the machine age as well as some leftovers of gilded age.
Black and somewhat ornate/ skeleton cast iron, gilding and enamel on the black machine work, and that automotive set of curves on some. The curves were sometimes strong and other times more like a router edge. Like leftovers. The things were sold to women who wanted something pretty. You could find some that were almost like a stickly, even. I had a cabinet, I took stuff off to make it perfect for a fly tying bench. It's in my basement still, and the cabinet is shot. I plan to build a table on that iron base. |
