1999 Hoyo de Monterrey Petit

Not to be confused with the Cuban marcas, this Jose Gener petit was a small Honduran cigar from the Villazon factory, packaged in a slide-top cedar mini box.

These inelegant little firecrackers were bigger than a club, but perfect for a 15-30 minute break.

Featuring Nicaraguan filler, Honduran binder, and an Ecuadorian Sumatra (like the Punch Rare Corojo, only EMS-colored) wrapper, in their prime these were medium-full cigars that gave a solid Villazon kick to the scrote without the lengthy relationship necessary to enjoy the larger sizes.

I bought these on a whim during a visit to JR Whippany back in the day. Had a great sit down with some locals and a nice dinner to boot.

I’m not sure if these were hand rolled or not. Most of the pictures of these online make them look nicer than the workingman’s cigars in my box. Mine are unsphisticated in appearance, with almost conical caps that were inexpertly applied.

When I smoke one, I find myself expectorating bits of tobacco like an old man spitting bits of shell while eating sandy clam chowder at a rustic snack bar on Cape Cod.

Despite their appearance and the flecks of tobacco I encounter, I really enjoy these little hick cigars. Like me, they’re old and scrappy.

Thanks for sharing one with me Sean, I appreciate your honest reviews.

Nice story as always.

I had no issues with bits of tobacco getting in my mouth, and i actually never have with any short, medium, long, or mixed filler cigars at all.

Not a bad smoke. I think it has passed its prime, but given its age, it still hung in there to be amongst the few i have scored 90 or above

Wait until you have your first Quintero. Short filler (used to swear it was constructed of floor sweepings) and will have you spitting on each draw.

Actually, i have smoked a fair number of Quinteros in several vitolas and enjoyed them and had no issues with them that i haven't also had with much more of expensive cigars.

No issues with getting tobacco in my mouth with them either.

Sounds like I have just been very lucky with the short fillers I smoke.

Have 3 boxes of 3 different vitola La Flor de Canos too, and no issues and think they are great smokes at a good price
