I concur with Harley's directions. I usually bleed it several times via the valve on the bottom, pausing a minute between attempts. Then I will hold down the ignition button, making sure it is not lit, and bring it to my ear to make sure it doesn't hiss. I also take another source of fire (match, candle or another lighter) and hold an open flame in front of it to make sure nothing is left.

The only other point to make is that a good fuel is very important. I've been using Lava for some time, but I've heard there are other good, highly refined fuels.
