Humidor - need a connoisseur's explanation please

Hello all....

Being a newbie, my recently discovered hobby has generated some questions (and interest) from friends and acquaintances. I was asked about the benefit(s) of having a humidor. I quickly realized that my answers were purely guesswork but not based on any personal experience or knowledge. I found myself using words like smooth, aged, or comparing the humidor to a wine cellar... but I really don't know what the heck I'm talking about!

Can some of you experts give me a good explanation of the value of a humidor (other than storage) so that when asked this question, I can give good, valuable, interesting answers?
